  • CountryUnited Kingdom
  • Born1962

Yinka Shonibare was born in London in 1962 and raised in Nigeria. He studied for his BA at the Byam Shaw School of Art between 1984-1989, and completed his MA at Goldsmiths College, London in 1991. He currently lives and works in the East End of London.

Known primarily for his figurative sculptures inspired by literature and art history rendered in recognisably African fabrics, Shonibare’s works bring together disparate cultural references and material to explore issues around colonialism and post-colonialism within the contemporary context of globalisation, as well as issues of national and racial identity and class and cultural politics.

Using a wide range of media, Shonibare examines in particular the construction of identity and tangled interrelationship between Africa and Europe and their respective economic and political histories.

Yinka Shonibare joined Iniva’s Board of Trustees in 2009.
