Born in Bhadravati, India in 1957, Sheela Gowda lives and works in Bangalore, India. Gowda’s work oscillates between drawing, sculpture and installation, with an apparent concern to symbolize relationships and the suffering these may bring about when they fail. Moreover, currently living and working in Bangalore, the artist evokes the natural world through the materials she uses.

She has taken part in group exhibitions including in 2010 Indian Highway, Herning Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2009 Textiles: Art and Social Fabric, MuKHA, Antwerp; Sharjah Biennial and Venice Arsenale. In 2008-09 India Moderna, IVAM Museum, Valencia, Spain, and Indian Highway, Serpentine Gallery, London. In 2008 Santhal Family, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp and Fire Walkers: Contemporary Artists from India and South Asia, Stefan Stux Gallery, New York. In 2007 Horn Please, Bern; Documenta 12, Kassel and the Lyon Biennale. In 2005 World Information City – Bangalore and Indian Summer – Contemporary Art from India, Paris. In 2004 Cabin Baggage, a project by Open Circle at the World Social Forum in Bombay; Contemporary Art from India, Thomas Erben Gallery, New York and Iconography in Transient Times, New Delhi. In 2003 Sites of Recurrence I, Dakshina Chitra, Chennai; How Latitudes become Form, The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; City Park at Project, Project, Dublin, and Khoj 2003, International Workshop, Bangalore. In 2001 Art and Nature, site-specific work executed at Bangalore, organised by the Goethe Institute. In 1998 Private Mythology, Contemporary Art from India, The Japan Foundation, Tokyo. In 1997 Telling Times, British Council, New Delhi. In 1995 Art and Nature, Buddha Jayanti Park, New Delhi and South African Biennale, Johannesburg.
